Dean: We're going to do WHAT in the backyard?
Sue: People will come. They'll come to our backyard for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up our street, not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at our door as innocent as children, longing for the past. "Of course, we won't mind if you have a look around," we'll say. "It's only a dish to share, your own meat to BBQ & a six-pack per person." They'll pass over the beer without even thinking about it; for it is beer they have and peace they lack.
Dean: I'm not even sure what you are describing is even possible.
Sue: And they'll bring their OFF!, and sit in shirt-sleeves on a perfect evening. They'll find they have reserved lawn chairs somewhere near the concession stand, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the movie, and it'll be as if they'd dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick, they'll have to brush them away from their faces.
Dean: But what about the grass?!?!?
Sue: People will come.
Dean: We can't afford a full sized popcorn machine or a cotton candy maker,
...we have shoes to buy for the children.
Sue: The one constant through all the years, has been the drive-in movie. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But drive-ins have marked the time, like the ones we used to go to here in San Diego like The Campus, The Strand, South-Bay, The Harbor, The Midway, The Frontier, The Pacific, The Tu-Vue. This backyard, this BBQ, this concession stand, is a part of our past. It reminds us of all that once was good, and it could be again.
Ohhhhhhhh, people will come. People will most definitely come.
Dean: What will the neighbors think? This is crazy talk!
Sue: They will come June 7th, for the Opening Night of Backyard Movie,
celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Drive-In Movies....
People will come, people will most definitely come!!!
